Prairie Restoration
native plants prairie pollinator habitat hummingbirds
A 5-acre property outside Kansas City had been heavily compacted and dominated by non-native turf grass. We transitioned the land to a native tallgrass prairie planting, restoring habitat for pollinators, songbirds, and small mammals.
Prairie restoration is slow work โ the payoff comes in years two and three as root systems deepen and the community self-organizes. We seeded 40+ native species, burned strategically in year two to suppress invasives, and watched monarchs return the following summer. The landowners now describe the property as something entirely different from what they bought.
